I had another assignment-less Sunday at work today so I took some time to go out and shoot random locations around Oshkosh. I started by revisiting the area I photographed for the shootout last week because there was some interesting stuff going on there I wanted to shoot that I didn't have time for during the shootout. In addition to the new photos I got, I took Dr. Gleason's suggestions on one of my photos and re-shot it with the criticism in mind. Basically, I just shot from a slightly different position to remove some of the empty space on the right side to give the photo better balance(though I did still end up cropping some in post-processing). Changing position also had the unintended benefit of showing three additional signs in the photograph; the Hwy. 21 sign, the traffic signal on the far left, and the "keep right" sign beneath it. I also got a car in this one, which I like...I think. Knowing that I still had a little space to work with on the right, I kinda want to go back and shoot it again from even further to the right to try and bring the traffic signal in away from the edge of the frame a bit. Anyway, I think this one is an improvement from the first attempt. What do YOU think?

As an amateur photographer, I have enjoyed taking photographs of scenery and architecture. In May of 2011, I took a photography study abroad class in London. I really loved the beautiful buildings and the area I was surrounded by. I wanted to capture the uniqueness that I have never seen in the states and share it with those who also have never seen it.

When I see a building that has been impacted by history and has seen things that no one else has seen, I feel like I am sharing in that moment. Every crack of foundation I feel that there is a story that can be shared through photography.

I am currently trying to become more involved as a photographer and trying to bring out what I feel is the most important part of a photo. Through more practice I hope to share what I feel about a building or scene so that others can know the role it has played in history.

I enjoy many different types of photography; one of my favorite things to photograph is people in environmental settings. I enjoy photography and the outdoors combining the two seemed natural to me. I think that people add an interesting dynamic to photos versus just photographing a landscape.
I also enjoy the photojournalism side to photography. Sometimes the events that I have to cover as a photojournalist can be hard to capture a stimulating image. It is always very exciting for me to capture an image that can show the true feeling of the event. Photojournalism can be very also difficult because as a photographer you are rarely sure of what will happen next, being able to capture an image without that planning is also very rewarding.

For me photography is about capturing something special, showing the true personality of a person or the feeling of event is what makes it enjoyable. Since I am new to photography I want to continue to experiment with the different type of photography while still continuing to capture the true beauty and personality of my subjects.

I’ve always been interested in shapes, colors, textures and the way they evoke emotions out of people. In general when you see a certain color, you feel a certain way. A color can serve as a calming effect or can evoke certain memories. You associate color and emotions together a lot of the time. To me, shapes are very important as well. In photography a round object can represent something fluid and never ending. When you incorporate that with a certain color or texture it can change your whole perception of what you are looking at. All of these three things together can make a picture more dynamic and more interesting to look at.

When I first got into photography I really wanted focus on fashion photography and portraits. I liked fashion photography mainly because I enjoy fashion and liked to look at fashion magazine pictures. Fashion in itself is all about color, shapes, and textures. I liked the way the colors and textures of a girl’s outfit could evoke her emotions in the pictures. Often if you saw bold textures and patterns combined with bright colors she was smiling or laughing in the photo. I liked the way you could mike different textures together and make the photo unique.

Then after taking media photo 1 and travel photography in England I realized I like to take natural looking stuff. I like taking photos of nature and of people in their natural settings. I was really confused on what I wanted to focus on after that revelation. Then I realized that every photo incorporates colors, textures, and shapes! You can take a picture of a person and use different colors and shapes and that can evoke different emotions out of the photo. You can do nature photography and take pictures of leaves (open project assignment example) and show the different types of textures and colors used. Each photo can evoke different vibes and feelings. What I’ve decided to focus on is different shapes, colors, and textures and get inspiration from that.

My work is to capture the other side of life, the close-ups of the smaller less paid attention side. An aspect of the unique, askewer, and gentle. To show what it is that exists even if we do not acknowledge it presents. The micro-worlds, that fills in the spaces of the world.
For this reason I question this, has anyone else seen what I have seen and have they experience it the same way? Has it touched them in the same way? For we all live on the same world, go to the same places, and experience the same thing but yet have different views of what we see. I don’t think. Yes, that is probably the least professional or technical way of going about photographing subjects, but my methods consist of curiosity and luck. If something interests me enough, I will take a photo; and sometimes that is as much thought as I put into it.

On the other hand, sometimes I will overthink it, especially when it comes to the decision to actually shoot the subject in the first place. Hesitation is my worst enemy and has led to many missed opportunities. However, it also has also forced me to be more creative and work with what I have.

Explaining my overall work process or interests is difficult because they don’t always appear to go together in many ways. That is probably because I am still experimenting with what styles and techniques I actually enjoy. The theme of my work is that all of the objects or people being photographed managed to get some sort of feeling out of me. More simply put, I like them and I want others to see them as I do.

It’s always tricky to take night photos. Whether the subject is still or in motion, it’s difficult to frame up and get the lighting just right. Growing up in Milwaukee I’ve always had a flare for the nightlife. During the summer nights in the city there is just always something going on and something to photograph.

From the heavily inebriated high school students getting put in the back of a squad car at Summerfest to the Irish Catholics singing along to a reggae music at a French festival in downtown Milwaukee, people tend to act with less inhibitions when the streetlights go on. Almost like different people.

Subjects tend to change drastically when photographed at night when compared to their daylight counterparts. Something as simple as a traffic light during the day wont turn as many heads as one that is lighting up a city corner at night. It’s an interesting dynamic and I’ve always leaned towards taking night photos as they depict everything in a different light.

Nature photography has always been an interest for me because it can’t be controlled as well as photographing people or objects. I like the spontaneity of nature yet I like being able to portray it from a different point of view.

Photographing animals is always enjoyable because they are playful and unpredictable. I can’t always tell them what to do and expect them to do it; I just hope that they do something that is interesting. I also enjoy showing how they interact with their surroundings.

I enjoy landscapes because I can photograph the same scene with different camera settings and it can turn out differently every time. There is more control in photographing landscapes because they don’t move so I can go back and get the right shot that I will need, in case I don’t get it just right the first time around.

Why that angle? What is it about this photo that makes you see something that you may not have really paid attention to otherwise? These are just a couple questions I ask myself as I photograph people and or inanimate objects. Art is such a broad term and can really be interpreted differently by everyone. My goal is to capture an expression in such a way that you can make your own thoughts about the exact reason for my photo.

From the first day I got my point and shoot camera back in 7^th grade, I was snapping photos left and right. I would try and capture just about everything that I came across. When I didn’t have my camera on me I would still in my mind analyze the frame of a scene in front of me. I’m constantly creating ideas in my mind of how I would have someone stand or what I would have as a background or foreground. I was never really interested with the standard portrait photo; I didn’t think it showed whom that person really was.

Although I mainly photograph people and am very intrigued by the untraditional portraits or angles to capture, I truly enjoy capturing those still life photos as well. Recreating the seven deadly sins, for example, was one of my favorite projects. Trying to recreate emotions or actions from a simple word really brings out the creativity in my photography. My goal overall is to just enjoy my own work and share the uniqueness of my style to others who will appreciate it.

Photography is another way in which to see the world. The image produced is my interpretation of the subject. One scene or subject matter can be photographed many different ways based on individual interpretations. It is this objectivity that excites me. My photographs show others how I perceive the world around me and how I interact with it. I want my photographs to display how I see things.

I tend to do close-ups because they show my subject in its simplest form. Without context provided by other objects in a photo, the viewer is forced to create their own meaning or interoperation of the photo. I want viewers to look at my photos with a sense of curiosity. Meaning that I want to make them work on their own meaning of what I photographed, I don’t want it to be so obvious.

Photography makes time travel possible by freezing one moment and sharing it with the viewers. It lets people experience more than they could in just the time of their own lives. Sight is a strong sense that can affect our emotions, memories, and connections between the image seen and the vision of the photographer. Photography is a unique art form that is always changing.

One of my favorite things to play with is shutter speed. It relates to the time and motion of a subject. When we freeze motion in a photograph we can see things that we sometimes can’t catch and examine in real time. It is similar to using a longer shutter speed, in which the viewers can examine seconds of life that people never see in real time.

Studio photography and portraits interest me the most. To photograph someone and get the results you want you must be able to take time with the person and have an understanding of the desired results. The outcome is never concrete and is more difficult than with an object. There is also the possibly of different ideas between the photographer and the model that can result in something you would never think of.
