Portable Flash

Some people might benefit from this type of portable flash. It isn't great, but it is cheap: $65-75. I've read people love them who don't need portable lighting that frequently.

They don't replace monolight but they are easy to move and will take batteries--so no worries about location shoots outside of battery power.

It might be good to have a general statement to everyone. This project required everyone to approach their projects in a different manner because so many photos were required, and everyone encountered the difficulties of doing so in varying degrees. However, there were also successes.

In general, what would I like to see? I wish I could have seen more photos sooner to give feedback. Because this project was discussed so early, there was plenty of time to show samples as you went along. I’d also like more consistency. I also wished everyone embedded their links into the posting.

What worked? Tom’s and Jaime’s photos stood out the most to me because they were thinking out-of-the-box projects that did succeed technically and aesthetically. They had a wow factor to them.

I also saw solid progress towards some portfolios. For example, Carol made strides towards her food styling portfolio. Becky found her groove going in closer and getting those details.

Your next challenge is your portfolio. Ideally, you will be able to use your open project for your portfolio. Don’t be surprised if I recommend you to shoot more for your portfolio if you are going for something rather specific.

I will be making individual postings on this site in the comments section for each of your projects but won’t post the grades there.

Better Late Than Never

Sorry this is late everybody. I had a lot of last minute problems with my assignment and I changed my mind on my project. My new open assignment takes a look at Christmas and commercialism. I played around with street photography to emphasize the point. Check it out at!

My blood, sweat and tears

Check out where I spend my time working and socializing in the city of Appleton at

Light has inspired each photo taken, light that appears in every day life.

My open assignment is here :

Go to to view my open assignment. I had originally wanted to take pictures in a bigger city but wasn't able to go so Oshkosh had to do...

Open Assignment

Here's is my open assignment. It is street photography in downtown
Appleton, which isn't nearly as interesting as my original photos of street photography in Milwaukee. Since I had some trouble with my Milwaukee photos, this is what I resorted to.

Echoes: An exploration of form repetition

My open assignment does not focus on a particular subject. Each of the photos rather utilizes the repetition of figure and shape to structure the composition. Check it out at my blog.

I won't be there to defend myself, so please be gentle!

One down, rest to go

Hi, gang. We have one posting for the open assignment! You can make links two ways in your postings. One way is to write it yourself in the Html mode. The other, simpler way is to highlight some words in your message (such as your site nickname), click on the link icon to the right of the italicized "i" between where you write the title and message, and then type/paste in the URL you want people to travel to. The highlighted words become the place we will click on to go to your page. Easy stuff. DrG

Studio pics

The first picture is of all things Cranky Pats. My friends work there so I thought my out of this world photography skills could help promote their business.

The second photo is of my friend Jess. She's an amazing artist and she's seen here throwing up her very exclusive art gang's sign.

The third photo is a bag of bullets. These are the bullets they fired off at my grandfather's funeral. Since they are bullets symbolizing his time served I thought I'd throw a red light over it to portray blood from the battlefield. Or some meaningful crap like that.

This unwashed brussels sprout looks very natural. It's not all one texture, which makes interesting. Also, if you zoom in there's a tiny green worm on the inside on the top leaf. I didn't even notice it!

Scotty Michel pensively looks into the camera.
I had some that had more dramatic shadows, but I liked this one because you can see the whole face and the color on one side adds some interest.

A discarded bamboo shoot still had some life in the leaves.
I decided on the one focusing on the roots instead of the leaves, I thought it was a more interesting aspect.
